Autopilot- Quinn XCII

Do you ever feel like your life is on autopilot? Like there’s nothing new happening and you’re just trapped in your head? This feeling is what Quinn XCII sings about in his song “Autopilot.” Based on the sound of this song, you would think that the lyrics would have a fun lighthearted message, but the upbeat song deceives you. It is actually quite ironic that the fun-sounding song has a type of gloomy, mysterious message.

P.C.

In the first verse of the song, Quinn sings, “Dear fear, I have met you laying down in this bedroom… there’s some demons I need to cleanse…” These lyrics are sort of depressing, but sadly relatable. Often times, our bedrooms are the places that we feel most vulnerable to fear because we are alone and finally have time to think. In those times, it’s easy to feel scared and that you’re alone. Quinn is talking about how he thinks about all of the demons that he has that scare him that he needs to get rid of.

Continuing on in the song, during the chorus, he sings, “Why’s my mind on autopilot all the time?” These lyrics are so relatable to so many of us. Often times, we go throughout our days without even realizing what we are doing. For example, I bet you could drive somewhere familiar without even noticing that you’re driving. This same idea is what Quinn is singing about. We go through life with our mind on autopilot. These lyrics are his way of telling us that we need to start living in the present. We can’t live in autopilot because we miss out on life’s beautiful moments.

Later in the chorus, Quinn sings, “I can’t seem to find the words to define the way I feel when I go through this…” This just explains the idea of being on autopilot even further. It is sort of an indescribable feeling of being in some sort of weird repetition like you have no control of your life. This is why this song sort of is mysterious, because it makes you think about indescribable feelings. Quinn also puts these lyrics to an upbeat sound because it adds to the indescribable feeling even more.

Although it is easy to live in autopilot, Quinn tries warning us that it’s not a good feeling. It’s easy to become one with fear and your demons and be trapped in a whirlwind of repetition. Instead of mysteriously living in autopilot, let’s live in the moment and take advantage of life.

The Bones- Maren Morris, Hozier

What is invincible? What do you have in your life that will not be damaged, no matter what? There are a lot of possible answers to this question. Hopefully, one answer that would come to mind is love. In the song, “The Bones,” Maren Morris and Hozier, sing about a relationship that is invincible. This relaxing, upbeat song makes us think about our relationships and how stable they really are.

P.C.

In the first verse of the song, they sing, “Life sure can try to put love through it, but we built this right, so nothing’s ever gonna move it…” These lyrics have such a great meaning. Morris and Hozier accept that life will throw things at us, testing the strength of love in our relationships, but their lyrics tell us that if our relationships are built on a firm foundation, then nothing life throws at us can damage them.

In the chorus of “The Bones,” they peacefully sing, “When there ain’t a crack in the foundation, baby, I know any storm we’re facing will blow right over while we stay put. The house don’t fall when the bones are good…” This is practically the moral of their song. When we have relationships that have a solid foundation, without any slight cracks, there will never be any doubt in “if the love is strong enough.” The house, as in the relationship, will make it through through the rough times because the love is invincible. Then, because you can have security in your relationship, that is where it grows even farther.

So many relationships nowadays don’t even make it to a month because they aren’t stable enough. To have good bones in a relationship, we need to grow together, trust each other, make sacrifices, put an effort in to make the other person happy, but most importantly, we need to love unconditionally. Whenever a relationship has those things, then we can truly sing “The Bones” like it is our life anthem because, “when the bones are good, the rest don’t matter.”

fever dream- mxmtoon

You know when you listen to a song and it automatically puts you in a good mood? Then you listen to it on repeat and you finally pay attention to the lyrics and you are shocked that it has such a good meaning behind it? Well, that’s what is happening to me with the song, “fever dream” by mxmtoon. At first, when you listen to the song, all you want to do is jam out and vibe with the sound of the song. It has a lighthearted, yet simple beat that makes it extremely easy to fall in love with. Then once you dive into the lyrics, you realize that mxmtoon is trying to send you a message!

The very first line of the song reads, “Life’s a losing game when you don’t play…” This is so true! So many people in our world complain that their life is boring, terrible, you name it, but we fail to realize that life is only what we make it! You are not going to enjoy your life if you don’t live it. We need to go out and do something, seize the day! Life might not always be smiles and sunshine, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t make the most out of what we have. Mxmtoon is encouraging us to take a chance with life because you’re missing out if you don’t even try.

In the pre-chorus of “fever dream,” the lyrics read, “I took the train, I took the car. I didn’t know just where I’d fall, or where it’d take me…” This part of the song is screaming adventure! This is mxmtoon’s way of telling people that we need to be adventurous! The lyrics show how she is stepping into the unknown and making the best of it! She encourages us to be spontaneous and live a little because we only have one life to live.

In the chorus, the full beat kicks in and the lyrics get even better. Mxmtoon sings, “Take your time enjoy it, every fleeting moment. Gettin’ by’s so boring…” These lyrics are so important to live by! Mxmtoon is saying that we need to slow down a little so we can experience life. Our world is so fast-paced that many times we are blindsided by the blessings in our lives. We need to live in the present and take things in so we can enjoy them. Just managing our way through life won’t bring happiness, we’ll only become better at scheduling our day. We need to be spontaneous, take risks, and enjoy the little things!

Life is never going to be perfect, but does that mean that we need to be scared to live it to its fullest? No! Mxmtoon’s “fever dream” challenges us to step into life with a new perspective. Would you rather live a boring life, barely making any mistakes, or would you rather live adventurously, making mistakes but learning from them and embracing life? After listening to “fever dream,” I know which one I’m going to choose. Will you take the risk to join me?

Rainbows- Forrest.

Imagine you are driving with your friends through a rainstorm. None of you really enjoy the rain so you’re all in a gloomy mood. Then suddenly, the rain stops and you are all relieved. You continue driving and eventually see a rainbow. This rainbow makes you all smile and enjoy the rest of the drive together. This concept is what Forrest sings about in his song “Rainbows.” When I listen to this upbeat, energetic song, it makes me realize that everything happens for a reason and that I am very blessed.

At the beginning of “Rainbows,” Forrest sings, “If you didn’t feel no rain, then we wouldn’t get no rainbows…” These lyrics are so important to understand! It is like the saying, “you can’t experience light without knowing darkness.” Forrest wants everyone to realize that without our tough seasons of life, we can’t have our good seasons. If we never went through the hard trials of life, then we would never get to see the good parts of life because we wouldn’t appreciate how truly blessed we are. In these lyrics, Forrest is sympathetic to everyone who is struggling and tries to relieve them from stress because he knows that what they are going through is crucial for their growth and happiness.

Right after the previous lyrics, Forrest sings, “And if you didn’t feel that way, then we’d all be the same, no…” This is something that we tend to overlook. I believe that we all understand that everyone is unique, but I don’t think we truly realize how that happens. If we all went through the exact same struggles and situations in life, then we would all be the same. Everything that happens to us makes us unique because we learn something out of everything that happens in our lives, therefore we learn parts of life that some may never learn.

Forrest later goes on to sing, “You don’t have to worry bout nothing…” Through this entire song, Forrest is trying to soothe the people in pain. He doesn’t want us to worry about anything because he knows that everything will be okay. This song is his way of crying out to everyone to just relax because he knows that you can get through anything. Once the dark season is over, he knows that you will have learned and grown as a person, which is crucial.

While listening to “Rainbows” for the first time, you would never guess that it has such a good message behind the lyrics because the sound of the song makes you feel easygoing and happy. However, after really listening to what Forrest is saying, it makes you evaluate how you view life. He encourages us to persevere through the rain in our lives because he knows that rainbows always follow the rain.

Anyone- Demi Lovato

Have you ever been in a place in your life where you feel like you are alone in your thoughts? Or maybe you feel like there is no one who cares about you? In Demi Lovato’s new song “Anyone” she expresses this deep pain. The song begins with a soft piano part and she then begins singing. Through the course of this song, you can hear the suffering that Lovato has gone through. She wrote “Anyone” because she knows how many people struggle with similar things to her.

P.C.

In the first verse of her song, Lovato sings, “Talked to my imagination. Confided into alcohol…” In this part of the song, Lovato is being extremely vulnerable. In fact, Lovato performed this song at the Grammy’s and had to restart because she started crying. In the video, you can see tears streaming down her face as she sings this song. For those of you who did not know, Lovato has recently spoke on her previous struggles with addiction. I’m sure that if it were Lovato’s first wish, she would not bring her problems with drugs and alcohol to the public eye, however, she is being very selfless when she writes and speaks honestly. In these lyrics, she sings about how alcohol was her counselor. Through sharing these lyrics, she hopes to encourage other people in similar situations to seek help and to make a change in their lives.

In the pre-chorus of “Anyone”, she sings “nobody’s listening to me, nobody’s listening.” During this part of the song, the piano is still lightly playing in the background, but her voice is gradually getting more powerful. As the strength in her voice grows, we can start to feel her pain more and more. Lovato expresses how she felt alone in the world. Though she never speaks of this directly, I believe that Lovato is crying out to her listeners, trying to get them to realize that we all have people who love us, no matter our circumstances.

The most powerful and heart-wrenching part of this song is the chorus. Lovato sings, “Anyone, please send me anyone. Lord, is there anyone? I need someone…” During these lyrics, the piano part and Lovato’s voice become very powerful. Through these lyrics, Lovato is expressing how she cried out for help. She was tired of living the life she had and was ready for a change, so she asked for help. This is a wonderful message that Lovato sends through this song. So many people in our world are too prideful to admit that they need help, and Lovato knows this. In being vulnerable, she begs people to set their pride aside, like she has, and just ask for help because she knows that living a life full of suffering is not worth maintaining your pride.

Even though Lovato has gone through a lot of pain and suffering, she still has a lot of courage. She puts her pride aside to help people through her story and music, and because of that, I commend her. Lovato did not share this song for sympathy. She opened herself up so that you could learn to ask for help when things get hard. Life is only what you make it. If you do not take advantage of the opportunity to become a happier version of yourself, then you will struggle your whole life.

Half A Man- Dean Lewis

It is extremely easy to question your self worth, in fact, most people struggle with it. We all know the saying, “you have to love yourself before you love someone else.” This saying is the core of Dean Lewis’ song “Half A Man.” In this song, Lewis uses gut wrenching lyrics to connect to the listeners. While listening to the solemn piano part in the background, people can sense the pain of Lewis’ story through his voice. This shows his vulnerability, which makes this song even more meaningful.

The basis of “Half a Man” is about how Lewis had to break up with his significant other because he wasn’t truly ready for that relationship. In the chorus of the song, he sings, “But how am I supposed to love you when I don’t love who I am? And how can I give you all of me when I’m only half a man?” Throughout this chorus, the piano in the background stays somber, but his voice raises. This shows how hurt he is, whenever everything around him is calm, he is still crying out in pain. Lewis is singing about how he doesn’t love himself enough, and implies that he needs to focus on himself.

A lot of people in relationships know that they need to take time to love themselves first, but they don’t admit it. Whenever you are in a relationship that you are not ready for, it becomes a toxic one, hence why Lewis is trying to focus on himself. He doesn’t want to hurt the other person that he cares about because he isn’t ready to handle the relationship. Through singing this, Lewis hopes to encourage people to love themselves first, because they will only cause damage if they don’t.

Lewis continues to express deep pain throughout this song. Listeners get a further sense of this pain when he sings, “And no one can ever hurt me like I’ve hurt myself.” This song is very honest, which makes it so relatable to the listeners. Our toughest critic is ourselves. We hurt ourselves more than anyone else in our lives, and Lewis is fully aware of that. Through singing these lyrics, it gives the reader the feeling that Lewis has experienced a lot of emotional and mental pain, but is ready to make a change. He is making an effort to love himself for who he is, and stop causing himself more pain.

“Half A Man” is a song about the start of Lewis’ journey to self love. The sound of this somber song, mixed with his heart wrenching lyrics make the listeners feel something. It makes people realize that they need to take a step back and find their self worth. In writing this song, Lewis shares his story in hopes of encouraging other people to love themselves and make a difference in their lives.

Bruises- Lewis Capaldi

Heartbreak is likely the hardest thing for a teenager to go through. Lewis Capaldi touches on this in his song, “Bruises.” In this song, he tries so sympathize with all of the other teens who are struggling through a breakup. Sometimes when someone is upset and struggling, listening to music that suits their moods helps them cope. Capaldi takes this into consideration in this song and portrays a gloomy mood throughout the whole song. Listening to this song gives people a nostalgic feeling in regards to their previous relationship.

Often times whenever someone is going through a breakup, they are told to just move on and forget about the other person. Capaldi expresses how he doesn’t want to move on. He sings in the pre chorus, “I’ve been told, I’ve been told to get you off my mind, but I hope I never lose the bruises that you left behind. Oh my lord, oh my lord, I need you by my side.” Capaldi shows himself being in the stage of denial in his heartbreak. He does not want to admit that he has to move on. He wants to hold on to every bit of his previous relationship. These lyrics can connect to the listeners so much because this is a very common feeling of heartbreak.

In the chorus, Capaldi sings, “And if only I could hold ya, you’d keep my head from going under.” This part of the song has a sad but honest truth. Along with Capaldi, so many people become codependent on their significant other. When this person leaves their life, they don’t know how to live without them. In these lyrics, Capaldi is talking about how if they would get back together, he would be able to live again. Like mentioned before, people like to listen to songs that express their current mood. Whenever someone who is going through a heartbreak listens to this song, they relate to those lyrics perfectly because they want their significant other back. Although it’s not the strong independent message that they need to be hearing, it’s what soothes them, which is a great idea on Capaldi’s end.

“Bruises” is all about heartbreak. We all wish that there wouldn’t need to be songs to soothe the hurting hearts, however it is part of life. Capaldi’s gloomy song lyrics help his listeners cope with the denial stage of a breakup. This song seems as though it wouldn’t help a hurting heart get through the breakup because it’s not uplifting, however it is a great song to listen to during the process of moving on.

everything i wanted- Billie Eilish

Have you ever found yourself searching for fulfillment in things that you’ve always wanted? In Billie Eilish’s song “everything i wanted,” she talks about the illusion that our utopian lives portray. She goes into depth on how she was brutally mistaken when she finally received everything that she had wanted. Listening to this song makes the listeners think about what will truly bring them joy.

P.C.

The song begins with a light piano in the background provoking a very melancholy feeling. Then Eilish comes in softly singing, “I had a dream, I got everything I wanted. Not what you’d think, and if I’m being honest, it might’ve been a nightmare…” So often, people think that they know exactly what’s best for them, and that if they could only have all the different things that they desire, then their lives would finally be complete. Through this song, Eilish tries to warn the listeners that they need to be content with where their life is, because what they’re constantly wishing for, isn’t always what will honestly make them happy.

Though this song can relate to anyone who tries to find fulfilment in unreliable things, Eilish is showing that this song isn’t really about a dream for her. Billie Eilish is extremely famous and is living the life that so many people, including her younger self, wish to live. In her lyrics, she sings about the weight of being famous and all the burdens she has to carry that the public eye is completely oblivious to. She sings, “’Cause everybody wants something from me now, and I don’t wanna let ’em down.” She then later continues, “If I knew it all then would I do it again? Would I do it again?” It is clear through this song that Eilish is contemplating if her utopian life as a famous singer is worth all of the emotional pain and pressure from everyone around her because she feels like it’s a nightmare.

“everything i wanted” makes listeners think. Though there is a layer of this song that pertains to life in the limelight, the core of it can relate to anyone and everyone. Billie Eilish is trying to tell the listeners that sometimes we don’t know what’s best for us, therefore we need to be content with our lives. We should stop being apathetic towards the lives we live, and start appreciating them for what they are, because more often than not, we don’t realize how blessed our lives truly are.

Why Not Me- Forrest.

Imagine you’re with your best friends. You are all in the car, driving down a country road with the windows rolled all the way down on a sunny, summer day. Sounds great right? Except you’re missing one thing, the perfect song. “Why Not Me” by Forrest is the perfect song for a summer day. Whenever I listen to this song, all I want to do is go outside and dance, and I’m not a dancer. The sound of the song in general just makes you feel like there isn’t a care in the world. The lyrics, however, portray this mood even more than the sound.

P.C.

Throughout the song, the artist talks about how so many people are concerned in the materialistic aspects of the world, rather than enjoying what’s around them. Forrest says, “Y’all can take the green stuff, I’ll be on a view high, new vibe, and it feels just like the old me. Back when I was younger undercover feeling so free…” In this part of the song, Forrest is speaking on how so many people nowadays rely on drugs and other similar things to make them happy. The artist says that while other people are wasting their lives, he is remembering how life was carefree as a child, and how he’s taking in nature for what it is. This is the artist’s way of calling out to the listeners, asking them to become more apart of nature and experience life for what it is, rather than trying to make life superficial.

The last portion of the song is my personal favorite. Forrest says, “You just sit there scrolling, I’m going to a place where I don’t have to deal with loading and the terms and conditions…” In this part of the song, the artist says that so many people are consumed in their phones, stressing over what everyone else is doing. He then continues, “We say that we’re all Christian, still got hatred in our vision. We’re just kids running through life and comparison’s decisions. Check the scriptures, wake up, breathe, relax, remember, aye there’s way more to life than getting retweets on your twitter. Hey baby, put your phone down…” These lyrics are so good! In this part of the song, Forrest touches on the hatred in the world, and specifically how people say they’re Christians but don’t resemble that through their actions. In writing this, he is asking people to be genuine, and remember that they only have one life to live, and they should not be wasting their time on worldly things. He is begging people to put their phones down, take care of themselves, and live in the real world, focusing on the beauty in everything instead of the materialistic parts of life.

“Why Not Me” sounds like a fun, lighthearted song to listen to, especially during the summer, but after further analysis, it becomes a song that has a beautiful message. Forrest is calling the listeners to live life to the fullest and take advantage of all of the world’s beauties. This is truly a message that everyone can learn from to make life more meaningful.
