Heartbreak is likely the hardest thing for a teenager to go through. Lewis Capaldi touches on this in his song, “Bruises.” In this song, he tries so sympathize with all of the other teens who are struggling through a breakup. Sometimes when someone is upset and struggling, listening to music that suits their moods helps them cope. Capaldi takes this into consideration in this song and portrays a gloomy mood throughout the whole song. Listening to this song gives people a nostalgic feeling in regards to their previous relationship.
Often times whenever someone is going through a breakup, they are told to just move on and forget about the other person. Capaldi expresses how he doesn’t want to move on. He sings in the pre chorus, “I’ve been told, I’ve been told to get you off my mind, but I hope I never lose the bruises that you left behind. Oh my lord, oh my lord, I need you by my side.” Capaldi shows himself being in the stage of denial in his heartbreak. He does not want to admit that he has to move on. He wants to hold on to every bit of his previous relationship. These lyrics can connect to the listeners so much because this is a very common feeling of heartbreak.
In the chorus, Capaldi sings, “And if only I could hold ya, you’d keep my head from going under.” This part of the song has a sad but honest truth. Along with Capaldi, so many people become codependent on their significant other. When this person leaves their life, they don’t know how to live without them. In these lyrics, Capaldi is talking about how if they would get back together, he would be able to live again. Like mentioned before, people like to listen to songs that express their current mood. Whenever someone who is going through a heartbreak listens to this song, they relate to those lyrics perfectly because they want their significant other back. Although it’s not the strong independent message that they need to be hearing, it’s what soothes them, which is a great idea on Capaldi’s end.
