Why Not Me- Forrest.

Imagine you’re with your best friends. You are all in the car, driving down a country road with the windows rolled all the way down on a sunny, summer day. Sounds great right? Except you’re missing one thing, the perfect song. “Why Not Me” by Forrest is the perfect song for a summer day. Whenever I listen to this song, all I want to do is go outside and dance, and I’m not a dancer. The sound of the song in general just makes you feel like there isn’t a care in the world. The lyrics, however, portray this mood even more than the sound.

P.C.

Throughout the song, the artist talks about how so many people are concerned in the materialistic aspects of the world, rather than enjoying what’s around them. Forrest says, “Y’all can take the green stuff, I’ll be on a view high, new vibe, and it feels just like the old me. Back when I was younger undercover feeling so free…” In this part of the song, Forrest is speaking on how so many people nowadays rely on drugs and other similar things to make them happy. The artist says that while other people are wasting their lives, he is remembering how life was carefree as a child, and how he’s taking in nature for what it is. This is the artist’s way of calling out to the listeners, asking them to become more apart of nature and experience life for what it is, rather than trying to make life superficial.

The last portion of the song is my personal favorite. Forrest says, “You just sit there scrolling, I’m going to a place where I don’t have to deal with loading and the terms and conditions…” In this part of the song, the artist says that so many people are consumed in their phones, stressing over what everyone else is doing. He then continues, “We say that we’re all Christian, still got hatred in our vision. We’re just kids running through life and comparison’s decisions. Check the scriptures, wake up, breathe, relax, remember, aye there’s way more to life than getting retweets on your twitter. Hey baby, put your phone down…” These lyrics are so good! In this part of the song, Forrest touches on the hatred in the world, and specifically how people say they’re Christians but don’t resemble that through their actions. In writing this, he is asking people to be genuine, and remember that they only have one life to live, and they should not be wasting their time on worldly things. He is begging people to put their phones down, take care of themselves, and live in the real world, focusing on the beauty in everything instead of the materialistic parts of life.

“Why Not Me” sounds like a fun, lighthearted song to listen to, especially during the summer, but after further analysis, it becomes a song that has a beautiful message. Forrest is calling the listeners to live life to the fullest and take advantage of all of the world’s beauties. This is truly a message that everyone can learn from to make life more meaningful.
